About the Project

Lawtonic is an AI tool designed to simplify the process of finding and comprehending local bylaws. Our specialized AI, Tonica, handles all the heavy lifting by searching through hundreds of pages of legal documents with lightning speed. Tonica breaks complicated legal jargon into easy-to-digest summaries, while still preserving the original information to avoid confusion.

What inspired us
The inspiration for this project came from the complexity of navigating municipal bylaws and the need for accessible, reliable, and user-friendly tools for local communities. We wanted to create an AI-powered assistant that simplifies legal jargon and provides quick answers to users' questions about their local governance. Our goal was to make navigating Kingston's bylaws as intuitive as possible.

What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned how to integrate natural language processing with municipal datasets to provide contextual and accurate answers. We deepened our understanding of frontend frameworks like Svelte for creating interactive and visually appealing user interfaces, and we explored creative ways to blend functional AI with an aesthetically pleasing design.

How we built it
We built this project using a combination of Svelte for the frontend and an express.js backend to handle data processing. The interface was designed with user experience at the forefront, incorporating SVG assets, responsive design, and dynamic dropdowns for model selection.

Challenges we faced
The main challenge was ensuring that the AI-generated summaries preserved the legal integrity of the bylaws while simplifying the language for users. Another challenge was getting the back-end to connect to the front-end.
