Inspiration:

Legal advice is often inaccessible due to cost and complexity. We built LawBot to provide free, instant answers to common legal questions, empowering users with clarity about their rights and procedures—inspired by the need for democratized legal resources.

What we learnt:

AI Integration: Fine-tuning Perplexity’s Sonar API taught us how to balance legal precision with simplicity, requiring curated datasets of real-world legal Q&A.

Backend Efficiency: Flask’s simplicity was ideal for routing, but we had to implement caching and async calls to reduce Sonar API latency.

How we built it:

Frontend: React Native for a unified mobile/web chat interface and homepage.

Backend: Flask (Python) to process queries, manage chat history, and integrate Sonar API.

AI: Perplexity Sonar API for legal Q&A, trained on curated datasets for reliability.

Chat History: Local storage (AsyncStorage) + Firebase backup for cross-device sync.

Challenges we ran into:

API Latency: Optimized Flask endpoints to reduce Sonar API response times.

State Management: Synced chat history between React Native and Flask backend efficiently.

Legal Safeguards: Added dynamic disclaimers to avoid misinterpretation of answers.
