Inspiration

Anyone who has participated in a hackathon knows that building the project is often the easy part. The hard part is dealing with everything around it.

You spend hours trying to understand deployment errors, figuring out whether your project actually matches the judging criteria, searching for the right mentor, and deciding what to prioritize next. When deadlines are only a few hours away, even small blockers can feel overwhelming. We experienced these frustrations ourselves and realized that builders need more than another chatbot. They need a practical copilot that can help them make better decisions, solve technical problems faster, and stay focused on building. That's why we created LaunchPad AI

What it does

LaunchPad AI is an AI-powered command center designed specifically for hackathon teams. It helps builders understand how ready their project is, identify what they should work on next, troubleshoot technical issues, and prepare for judging. Some of its key capabilities include: Project readiness and scope analysis Personalized next-step recommendations AI-powered debugging assistance Mentor request generation Mock judging and project feedback Instead of wasting time jumping between documentation, forums, and chat channels, teams get actionable guidance in one place.

How we built it

We built LaunchPad AI using a modern full-stack architecture focused on speed and reliability. The backend was developed using FastAPI and Pydantic to provide structured APIs and reliable validation. For the frontend, we used Streamlit and customized it extensively with our own styling system to create a polished, modern experience. The intelligence layer is powered by large language models through Groq APIs, enabling contextual analysis, recommendations, and debugging support. To ensure smooth deployment and scalability, we containerized the application using Docker and deployed the services to cloud infrastructure. We also implemented automated testing to validate critical user workflows before deployment.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was handling external AI service failures.

During testing, we discovered that API rate limits and temporary service interruptions could impact the user experience. We didn't want users to be greeted with error messages when they needed help the most. To solve this, we implemented a fallback system that can continue providing useful diagnostics and recommendations even when external AI services are unavailable.

Another challenge involved creating a seamless user experience. Getting the interface to behave exactly as we envisioned required multiple iterations, experimentation, and a surprising amount of debugging. Like most hackathon projects, many of the toughest problems were the ones we never expected when we started.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that LaunchPad AI became more than just a concept. We successfully built a working platform that combines project guidance, debugging support, and judging preparation into a single experience. We're also proud of the reliability of the system, the quality of the user experience, and our ability to deliver a complete solution within the limited timeframe of a hackathon. Most importantly, we built something we would genuinely want to use ourselves.

What we learned

This project taught us a lot about building AI-powered products under real-world constraints. We learned that reliability matters just as much as intelligence. A great AI experience isn't only about generating answers—it's about ensuring the product remains useful when things go wrong. We also gained valuable experience in full-stack development, AI integration, deployment, testing, and designing products around actual user pain points.

What's next for LaunchPaTh AI

We're excited to continue expanding LaunchPad AI beyond its current MVP. Future plans include persistent project workspaces, team collaboration features, smarter recommendation systems, deeper project analysis, and improved mentor matching. Our long-term vision is to create an intelligent companion that supports builders throughout their entire hackathon journey from idea generation to final submission. We believe every builder deserves a copilot that helps them spend less time fighting problems and more time creating amazing things.
