Inspiration

We wanted to relate the theme of 'Try Something New' to us as freshman, who are trying something new ourselves: college. We wished we had a tool to help us get ready for college, so we decided to make one!

What it does

When you click launch, we'll ask you a few short questions about your college situation. For the best results, try to complete these questions at least six months before your move-in date.

After you've filled out the survey, you'll have a personalized checklist that will tell you exactly what you need to complete and when. This will give you a long-term plan for your journey towards college and hopefully make things easier for you as you enter this new era of your life!

All of the data you enter is stored locally on your computer, which means we do not have access to it! You can also export a copy of your data for your personal use.

How we built it

We used HTML, CSS, and JS to make a simple website using Visual Studio Code. We included a few libraries to make some things a bit quicker, and hand coded the rest.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into frequent challenges, and sadly weren't able to overcome all of them. On the ones we did run into, such as issues with our online database and authentication service, we compromised to be able to deliver a functional product. Two issues remain, as we were unable to fix them in the time we had available:

  • When marking items as completed, refreshing will show them as incomplete (even if browser storage has them saved as complete)
  • Time sorting seems to be a bit buggy, but not sure what is wrong.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We delivered a functional product with minimal compromises.
  • Our product is elegant and easy to use.
  • Users can download a copy of their data to modify in other programs in a JSON object format.

What we learned

Of the many things we learned, highlights were learning a lot about browser cookies, and creating/downloading files dynamically with JS through HTML.

What's next for LaunchPad

  • Fixing up the remaining issues
  • Enabling databases to store user info to be accessible across devices without the need to export.
