The Problem

Imagine receiving a voice message from your boss or a family member, urgently requesting you to transfer funds or share sensitive information. The voice sounds exactly like them—but what if it’s a fake? This isn’t just a theoretical concern anymore. Deepfake audio phishing scams are rapidly increasing, with one high-profile case in 2019 where fraudsters used AI-generated audio to impersonate a CEO, tricking an employee into transferring $243,000. As deepfake technology becomes more sophisticated, these audio-based cyberattacks are expected to grow more frequent and harder to detect. That's why we decided to act.

Our Solution: Lauck

We developed Lauck, a secure platform designed to counter the escalating threat of deepfake audio. Lauck provides a safe way to send, receive, and verify voice messages using blockchain technology. Every audio file sent to others through our application is authenticated via the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA). This cryptographic signature ensures that once a voice message is recorded and sent, it’s not just stored—it’s protected with a unique digital signature that verifies its origin and guarantees its integrity upon being received by the recipient side. In this way, Lauck provides peace of mind against deepfake manipulation.

How We Built It

Our tech stack includes React for the frontend, Motoko for the backend, Pinata’s IPFS API for decentralized data storage, and ICP for blockchain integration. We chose IPFS for its decentralized nature, which aligns perfectly with blockchain’s strengths. Not only does IPFS enhance cybersecurity by distributing data, making it more resilient to attacks, but it’s also an efficient and scalable solution for real-world applications. In combination, these technologies allow Lauck to offer both security and scalability, crucial for safeguarding sensitive voice data in the long term.

Challenges and What’s Next

This was our team's first hackathon, and we faced numerous challenges working with ICP and Blockchain, as none of us had prior experience in these areas. However, we've learned a lot throughout the process and are excited about the potential of Lauck. Moving forward, we aim to improve the platform’s functionality, enhance user experience, and explore further integrations to make Lauck a practical tool for combating deepfake audio fraud in everyday communication.
