Latvian Heraldics

Inspiration

We wanted to make learning about Latvian culture and history, geography engaging, especially for students. Heraldry (coat of arms designs) is a fascinating but often overlooked topic. By turning it into an interactive quiz, we aimed to:

1. Teach users about Latvian cities and their symbols.

2. Make history visually appealing through heraldic images.

3. Encourage friendly competition via a quiz format.

What it does

A quiz game with 79 questions about Latvian heraldry.

Each question shows:

1. An image of a city’s coat of arms.

2. A short description (excluding the city name).

3. 4 multiple-choice answers (1 correct).

4. Players test their knowledge and learn about Latvian geography/history.

How we built it

Frontend: React Js

Challenges we ran into

1. Collecting data about countries, generating the questions.
2. Finding high-quality heraldic images (some were outdated/low-resolution).
3. Balancing difficulty—ensuring questions were neither too easy nor obscure.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

1. Created a complete database of 79 heraldic questions.
2. Designed an intuitive UI with clear visuals.
3. Made Latvian history accessible and fun for all ages.

What we learned

1. How to structure quiz logic (randomization, scoring).
2. The importance of visual aids in educational tools.
3. Latvian heraldry is full of hidden symbolism!
