Inspiration
As young people living through the climate emergency, we are worried about the effect environmental degradation has on our food system. As year after year, our fields produce less and less food, we must now be more conscientious about how we use our food. That's where LatePlate comes in.
What it does
LatePlate will connect to your grocery ordering app, think Grubhub, SaveTheDishes, UberEats, etc. LatePlate then will read all your grocery data and then will tell you when your food will expire. This helps people keep track of their food, so nothing goes to waste.
LatePlate will also create its own verified expiration dates, so you won't be misled at the grocery store again. Since grocery stores are not required by law to report the true expiration date.
LatePlate will also send notifications when your food is close to expiry to remind you to eat it.
LatePlate will also have gamification integrated, with users inputting their food waste, and LatePlate comparing their results with other users.
LatePlate will also advise on how to preserve food, use leftovers and other food waste-reducing tips.
How we built it
We used Python to build a prototype app.
Challenges we ran into
A lot of the skills required for this project are beyond our capabilities. There's not enough time for us to learn enough to build this.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Participated in a Hackathon. Working in a group effectively.
What we learned
How to develop in a team.
What's next for LatePlate
We plan on continuing this project after ElleHacks.
