What I learned
Building LastMile Market taught me that the strongest agentic systems combine model reasoning with deterministic operational services. I found that agents are most effective when they coordinate verified data, explain results, and manage a workflow—not when they independently invent scores, routes, or inventory quantities.
I also learned that food-access planning is not a single optimization problem. Community need, transportation barriers, existing coverage, travel time, inventory, vehicle capacity, cold-chain requirements, and changing local conditions must be evaluated together.
Providing Scout, Router, Dispatch, and Sentry with the same focused context produced more consistent recommendations and reduced unnecessary model work. Structured outputs and application-level validation made those recommendations safer and easier to review.
Most importantly, I learned that explainability cannot be added at the end. Staff need to understand why a site was prioritized, how a route was selected, whether the inventory fits, and what evidence supports a reported change. Human approval remains essential because these operational decisions affect real communities.
What's next for LastMile Market
My next step is to move LastMile Market from a working demonstration into a pilot with mobile-market operators and community partners. I plan to validate the workflow with staff, measure the planning time it saves, and compare its recommended missions with actual service outcomes.
I also plan to expand geographic coverage, incorporate more live public and partner data, strengthen Access Watch for complex and JavaScript-rendered sources, and connect the application to live inventory and fleet systems. Future routing capabilities will support multiple vehicles, recurring schedules, changing demand, and real-time disruptions.
As the platform matures, I want LastMile Market to learn from approved missions and field outcomes while continuing to preserve transparent scoring, traceable evidence, deterministic operational constraints, and human decision authority.
