Inspiration
Our team's inspiration behind the project comes from our own personal experiences with wasted food as many of us often have items of food that we don’t consume or use simply due to dislike. With these items of food what often occurs is that it becomes waste and we simply throw it out leading to poor consumption habits and this is something we aim to solve. We were also inspired by the statistic on the UN’s website regarding sustainable consumption as it states that over 17% of food is wasted commercially which we realized is a common practice, especially in the restaurant industry where often at the end of a restaurant's service the food is tossed out. Through these realizations and experiences, we aimed to develop a project that would make use of common leftover food or food waste that individuals do not aim to consume
What it does
Our project is called LastBite and it allows users to register as a customer or a seller and engage in an online food marketplace. The website essentially functions as an online grocery store where sellers can add specific items of food or even dishes they wish to get rid of. A customer is able to view the vendors and listing within their nearby area and select items to add to their cart from what the seller has listed. They can then arrange a time at which they will head to the seller and pick up their order
How we built it
We used Nextjs and React as a front-end framework, supabase database as a backend, zustand state management, Mantine component library.
Challenges we ran into
Time was one of our biggest challenges as we struggled to implement all the initial ideas that we had into our project. Additionally one of the main challenges we faced was the implementation of our database for the marketplace. We also initially ran into challenges with our concept as there were some concerns that were raised and so it required us to reevaluate our concept.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we have a prototype with limited functionality within the time frame we had. Additionally, we are very proud of the design of our landing page as it looks quite professional
What we learned
We learned that it is quite difficult to implement all the ideas we wanted so it is necessary to be selective with the implementation and focus on the core components of our project.
What's next for LastBite by Team Rocket
We would aim to make LastBite more mobile-friendly so that it is accessible to a greater audience at any time. This can be done via a mobile app
