Inspiration
The spark for this game came from currently living in a city that is hosting World Cup matches. As I thought through the massive logistical challenges my city's leadership was going through to pull it all together, this game idea popped into my head. In terms of game and world design my two major inspirations are Game Dev Tycoon and Sim City 2000. I wanted to combine a metric based feedback loop with the scale and simulation fun of overlooking an entire city.
What it does
Players can select different scenarios that each bring unique challenges including but not limited to a music festival, a gaming convention, the Olympics, or even the World Cup. Other parameters can be controlled such as the size of your city, the resources you have access to, and the amount of time you have to plan. It challenges the player's attention to detail, resource management, and quick thinking skills.
How I built it
Since the focus of this competition is on the design aspect, I spent most of my time in ideation and the iterating on those ideas. One of my favorite techniques for generative thinking is using a Zwicky box. By putting broad concepts along the box, it allows me to quickly come up with fresh ideas!
Challenges I ran into
Being a team of one, the main challenge was time and my general lack of art skills.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The idea itself, specifically the progression system and how it rewards player behavior and attempts to keep them hooked.
What's next for Last Minute Mayor
The next steps would be to flesh out a functional MVP and put it in front of players. Iterating on what parts were fun, which aspects of the difficulty need to be tweaked, and what should be cut entirely.
