Inspiration
I wanted to build a game that felt like something I would actually want to play. I've always enjoyed games where you keep getting stronger, make different upgrade choices, and survive increasingly difficult enemies. This is where my idea of Last Knight came from, a medieval-based survival game that combines combat with endless waves of enemies. There is no end to this game, only stronger players!
What it does
Last Knight is a medieval survival game where you fight endless waves of enemies, collect coins, and choose upgrades to become stronger. Every run is unique because of the randomness of the upgrades you can select, as well as the enemies you may encounter. Coins can also be used to upgrade your skills tree, purchase skins, or simply be collected to climb the leaderboard. This game is all about becoming the strongest knight in the kingdom!
How we built it
Last Knight was built through a combination of human creativity and AI-assisted development. The game idea, design decisions, and prompts were created by me, while generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini were used to create many of the game's assets. I also used Canva to further edit and decorate some of the assets. On the other hand, the code was heavily assisted by GitHub Copilot, which helped with implementing most of the game systems and features. Platforms like Supabase were also used to implement a login and sign-up system, which was further extended to support global leaderboards and progress saving. For audio, the game's music was found online through YouTube, with the specific sources listed in the README file, while sound effects were sourced from Pixabay.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges I faced was trying to build a complete, functionable game within the hackathon time limit. There was a lot of features I plan to implement to Last Knight, so I had to prioritize the essential ones and focus on getting the core gameplay working first. Another challenge was trying to get everything to work together and fix bugs along the way.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm most proud of actually finishing a complete game during my first hackathon. In particular, I am glad that I was able to go from an idea to a playable game with combat, upgrades, progression, and many more features. Moreover, I am also very proud of the assets created for Last Knight, as it fits within the medieval theme and looks visually appealing.
What we learned
I learned a lot about game development, especially how important it is to plan out the main features before building everything. I also learned how to code under time pressure, as I was able to create a complete game before the deadline of the hackathon. Furthermore, I learned how much time testing and debugging can take. Most importantly, I learned that I can actually build something much bigger than what I originally thought I could.
What's next for Last Knight
If I continue working on Last Knight, I would add more enemies, weapons, upgrades, maps, and many more features that would enhance user experience. I'd also like to keep improving the progression system and add more content to give players more reasons to keep coming back.
