Inspiration

I began working on Laser Limbo on the Quest 2 once it became clear that Meta’s upcoming headsets would rely heavily on full-color video passthrough. The idea was to create a co-located bullet-time dueling shooter that works equally well in both small and large play spaces. Since then, I’ve been developing the game (sometimes with support) toward a complete release.

Shooting has always been the core of the game, but I also wanted to introduce more party-style, co-located mixed reality mechanics to expand the experience. The Meta Horizon Start Developer Competition ultimately motivated me to bring three of those ideas to life and release them as a major update (the Full Release Update).

What it does (New Features that come with the Update)

Laser Sword Solo Training - Based on the existing solo training mode, you can now choose the lightsaber and fight waves of cute but angry pixel drones that become increasingly challenging.
New Coin Clash mode (gun-free) - Grab and throw coins while maneuvering around moving laser traps to feed your living piggy bank and score points.
Pop N Stop mode (gun-free) - Inspired by Squid Game: pop soap bubbles, but don’t move when the stop tone plays if you want to survive.

How we built it

We currently work with Unity 2022.3.62f3 and the 3D modeling tool 3D-Coat, along with Adobe Photoshop. We use a few code assets from the Unity Asset Store, but all 3D models are fully self-made.

Challenges we ran into

Time. Implementing all the planned new gameplay features before the deadline while also caring for a one-year-old child was definitely challenging—but in a rewarding way.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We completed all additional features without compromises and with proper polish.

What we learned

There is so much more to explore when it comes to mixed-reality game mechanics for co-location scenarios.

What's next for Laser Limbo — Full Release Update

If we win, we will use the prize money to implement the latest Meta SDK tools to stay fully up to date. We also plan to add a sophisticated single-player campaign that combines all existing multiplayer mechanics.
