Integrating XR headsets with PocketPioneer’s real-time spatial data opens new horizons for gaming technology. For instance, it enables full-body tracking in large open space, capturing the player’s entire body volume beyond just the hands and head, which significantly surpasses traditional VR trackers in usability and effectiveness.

  • Full-Body Tracking: Captures not only skeletal positions but also the entire body volume, including thickness of individual body parts and visible clothing, enabling enhanced virtual interaction possibilities.

XRDC Project: Laser Maze Game

The Meta Quest 3 and PocketPioneer work together to detect player interactions with laser obstacles in real-time using detailed 3D scans of the player's environment. Players must navigate through a path without touching any laser obstacles. PocketPioneer’s full-body tracking ensures precise detection of all intersections with virtual objects.

Technical Implementation

Equipment:

  • MR headset: Meta Quest 3
  • PC or mobile phone connected to Q3D PocketPioneer

Data Transmission Process:

  1. The game on Meta Quest 3 identifies virtual objects requiring intersection detection and transmits their position, rotation, and size to the PC/phone via UDP.
  2. The system is calibrated by specifying the real position and orientation of PocketPioneer in the virtual space before starting the game.
  3. Simplified copies of the transmitted objects are reconstructed on the PC/phone as scalable cubes.
  4. PocketPioneer generates a detailed 3D scans of the player's environment and determines intersections.
  5. Results are sent back to Meta Quest 3, driving game logic.

  1. Connect PocketPioneer to the PC/phone and launch the processing application.
  2. Use Meta Quest 3 to scan the room and define the play area.
  3. Click the “Laser Maze Game” thumbnail in Meta Quest 3.
  4. Calibrate PocketPioneer’s position:
    • Press A on the right controller for one axis.
    • Press X on the left controller for the other axis.
  5. Set aside the controllers and switch to hand tracking via PocketPioneer.
  6. Use the virtual tablet to start the game by pressing Start Laser Game.
  7. Navigate to the level's starting point and activate the game by pressing the red button on the pole.
  8. Avoid touching any laser obstacles to retrieve the diamond.
