Inspiration

My inspiration for project LAL arose from the bizarre nature of a setup under current light sources such as bulbs. Their unregulated, uneven light distribution, fragile nature and high maintenance level needed a change hence the project begun.

What it does

Project LAL focuses on providing light controlled evenly over an area via strips of modified optic fibres coated with luminous material. When exposed to a laser beam, the particles are agitated and this produce light.

How we built it

We started by sourcing luminescent powder and coated it on the interior of thin strips of translucent tubing. A laser is directed to the powder under controlled amounts to get light emissions.

Challenges we ran into

1, tendency to overheat 2, sourcing for laser diodes

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have managed to control spectrum and intensity of light produced, it is evenly distributed in an area, less maintenance level and occupies less space on corners of walls hence a cleaner office setup.Their flexibility also supports easier handling and storage.

What we learned

Lasers in conjunction with some materials can provide reliable lighting alternative to current crude bulbs and fluorescent lights.

What's next for Laser Ambient Lighting (LAL)

We plan on modifying it to suit large industrial spaces , aircrafts, ships and other spaces where normal lights would prove ineffective under strenuous conditions.
