Inspiration
Two things always bugged us about games. Tower defense is all about killing: you build a tower and mow down monsters forever. And cozy games are lovely, but nothing is ever really at stake. So we asked a strange question. What if a tower defense was about saving the enemy instead of destroying it? And what if "the dark" was not evil at all, just lonely, forgotten things looking for warmth?
That question became LanternKeep. We aimed it right at the warm, cozy spot that does well on Meta Horizon, then gave it a hook those games do not have: you do not destroy the enemy, you save it.
What it does
LanternKeep is a cozy tower defense where you protect a little mountain shrine with light instead of weapons. And the dark you hold in that light long enough turns into your next friend.
You call cute spirit friends to your side and place them along the path. Each one glows. The cold, creeping enemy is called the Gloom, and it can only be hurt while it stands inside your light, so you cover the path with glowing pools and leave no dark gaps.
Here is the special part. If you keep a piece of Gloom in your light long enough, it does not die. It warms up and becomes a new friend who fights beside you. You do not kill the enemy. You save it. Every friend you have was once a lost light you rescued.
Make it to morning and Dawnbreak happens. All your light bursts out in one warm wave, the dark runs away, and the shrine glows gold. Then you collect, merge, and chase the Spirit Album: every friend you have saved.
How we built it
LanternKeep is a full pre-production design package, not a finished game, because this is a design contest. It is four parts that fit together: a Game Design Document, a Player Journey Map that walks through the first 15 minutes, a 10-page Visual Concept Package, and a Production Plan.
We studied what works on Meta Horizon, picked Tower Defense and Strategy (the genre with the most room), and designed every system to feed the next one. The art is hand-painted-style, lantern-lit, and warm, all kept in one matching style. It is designed to be built inside Meta Horizon Worlds, using its TypeScript scripting and built-in leaderboards.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was making "fight with light" actually interesting and not just standing still. We fixed it by turning it into a coverage puzzle, then adding light that has color and mixes, so placing your friends feels a little like cooking.
We also had to keep the game cozy but still tense. The dark really does want your flame, but the game is never scary or mean.
And the trickiest tech problem is knowing what is lit, fast enough, on a phone. We solved it with a simple grid of brightness. The best part is that the same grid also runs the rescue meters and the color mixing almost for free.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proudest of the rescue. No other cozy tower defense lets you save your enemies and turn them into friends. It is the clever hook and the warm heart of the game at the same time.
We also love Dawnbreak, the big light bloom that ends every night and feels amazing each time. And we are proud that all four parts of the package tell the exact same story, down to one color palette, so it reads as one real game.
What we learned
The best new idea often comes from flipping the one thing at the center of a genre. For us, kill became save. The strongest designs make the gameplay, the feeling, and the story all the same thing. Here, your health, your light, and your mood are one. And we learned there is a real, empty spot between "scary game" and "game with no stakes," and a cozy game with real heart can fill it.
What's next for LanternKeep
First we build the small first version, one part of the mountain with the full loop, inside Meta Horizon Worlds. After that: team defense where two keepers share one path, weather and seasons that change the puzzle, deeper little stories for each friend, and player-made paths to share. A live "Season of Lights" keeps the collection growing past 100 friends, so there is always one more light to bring home. 🏮
