Inspiration

Throwback to 2020 when the global pandemic suddenly hit the world and every interaction had to be moved online. Do you remember using zoom or google meets for an online meeting for the first time? Or maybe teaching your grandma how to call you through a messenger? We realized that the first time experiences on different platforms pose challenges that can be elevated with some assistance.

What it does

This is why we created Lantern - an AI powered browser extension that helps you walk through different tools with ease. It creates a step-by-step guide based on any questions that you may have about the platform. It also offers a voice over and search by voice options to assist the people with visual impairments. There are three options to select your tech proficiency which adjusts the pace of the walk-throughs based on your choice. Additionally, you can create your own walk-through guide to customize the instructions for other users, for example making sure your grandma is able to join a family group call.

How we built it

We used Figma as our main tool. As for the logo and start screens, we used Adobe Illustrator to create the illustrations.

Challenges we ran into

We took a long time to come up with an idea that fits the prompt and showcases our own interests. This led us to be more on a time crunch that we would've liked.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We finished it for the most part and adapted the learning experiences from the previous design-a-thon.

What we learned

We figured how to use smart animate on Figma to make a cool start screen. We also learned that we should connect the frames as we go to avoid the long tedious work at the end. Moreover, we realized how many steps are involved in doing a simple task online (for example, setting up an online meeting takes a lot more steps than we expected).

What's next for Lantern

We would want our walkthroughs to evolve with time. A couple more features that we didn't have time to implement - skipping some parts of a walkthrough, speeding it up or slowing it down, a chatbot option being available at every step of a guide, and more.
