Lantern: A Literary Wellness App
Inspiration
In tough moments, stories often become our lanterns—guiding us through darkness, reminding us of courage, hope, and persistence. Literature has always carried timeless wisdom, yet most of us only encounter it in classrooms or quotes online.
We wanted to create a way for people to receive personalized literary wisdom, turning great books into gentle companions for emotional wellness.
What it does
Lantern transforms your daily reflections into Wisdom Cards inspired by classic literature.
- You share how your day went—whether it was overwhelming, joyful, or uncertain.
- Lantern generates personalized cards with short passages, metaphors, and life lessons from literature.
- Each card distills complex stories into simple wisdom you can carry with you.
It’s like having Tolkien, Harper Lee, or Steinbeck whispering encouragement when you need it most.
Beyond wisdom cards, Lantern also offers mood recipes and emotional weather reports to help users nurture reflection and self-care.
How I built it
- Frontend: Built with React + Tailwind for a calm, bookish aesthetic with smooth card layouts.
- AI backend: Powered by natural language models to map user reflections to literary metaphors and distilled life lessons.
- Content design: Curated timeless stories and themes (hope, persistence, courage, resilience) from classics.
- UI features: Interactive wisdom card generator, mood journaling input, and soft gradient styling for a warm, calming feel.
Challenges I ran into
- Balancing literary authenticity with emotional clarity—how to stay true to the source material while making it accessible.
- Designing cards that feel personalized and warm, not just like static quotes.
- Creating a user flow that feels therapeutic rather than like just another productivity or journaling app.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- Turning literature into a tool for everyday mental health.
- Building a working prototype where users can actually input their day and get uplifting, story-driven wisdom.
- Crafting a design aesthetic that feels calming, approachable, and magical—like opening a lantern in the dark.
What I learned
- Storytelling + wellness can be a powerful combination when designed thoughtfully.
- Sometimes the simplest interaction (“Tell me about your day…”) can unlock the deepest reflections.
- People resonate most when wisdom feels personalized, not generic.
What's next for Lantern
- Expanding the library: adding wisdom cards from world literature, poetry, and non-Western classics.
- Introducing streaks and literary journeys (e.g., a resilience path through Tolkien, a courage path through Harper Lee).
- Mobile app launch with reminders for daily check-ins.
- Integration with mindfulness practices (breathing prompts, mood reflections tied to literary themes).
Lantern’s mission is simple: to light your path with the wisdom of stories, one card at a time.
