Inspiration
Couple months ago i wanted to create a new vm in my home-lab and had no idea which IP-Adress was already taken. I was also to lazy to create a documentation by hand, thus i created LanLens which automatically does that for me.
What it does
LanLens uses many different approaches to scan your Network for devices and also - if enough data is available - connects them through relations. It convenently is hosted in a docker container and has a clean and simple webview. It also detects changes and new devices and informs me through one of 3 notification channels.
How we built it
Through SDD and OpenClaw, i was able to use ChatGPT Codex extensivly to create this application.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest part was balancing detail with clarity. The usage of such many Network detection methods, made it hard to distinguished, which information is factually usefull or not. This took many weeks of testing with differents networks, like home-labs and even enterprise networks.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The 100% Automatic detection and visualaisation of my network thorugh an easy to use web Dashboard. This was the main goal and it was accomplished.
What we learned
An Idea can sound easy to begin with, but with details like many different protocols and security to consider, it is still easy to work on, but hard to track every step.
What's next for LanLens
LanLens has already a huge Userbase, which iam really proud of. This shows me, that there is a use-case and people are using it. For that reason, i'd like to keep it open-source and free to use and to fork, forever. I will extend the functionality and hope, that my tool helps other people too.
