Inspiration

I started learning Portuguese so I could speak with my partner's family, and found learning with subtitles an intriguing but difficult option. I found myself constantly pausing to translate and trying to distinguish words from each other, but without both the base and translated subtitles, it was difficult. Also, travelling to see his family opened me up to a lot of content not available where I live, but much of it was without English subtitles. I built Language Stream to open me up to better learning opportunities whilst developing my skills as an engineer.

What it does

Enter Language Stream! The extension allows you to watch side-by-side base and translated subtitles, and colour codes the subtitles so you can see what words mean what. It also allows you to translate any subtitles into your own language and save them for later offline watching!

What we learned

I learnt the importance of planning before implementing, and doing a quick check that everything is working before adding additional features to prevent missing bugs that came from your last edit (don't get distracted with the excitement of adding features; remember the basics)!

What's next for Language Stream

Hopefully I'll get some feedback from users to implement some new features, and looking to the future of APIs, I'm hoping if we got a Voice API we could create subtitles for shows without subtitles just using the audio.
