Inspiration

Language Learner was inspired by the need for an accessible tool to help users improve their speaking abilities. Whether for professional development or personal growth, speaking confidently and accurately is essential. We wanted to build a solution that leverages advanced technology to offer real-time, meaningful feedback, helping users practice and improve their communication skills in a supportive environment.

What it does

Language Learner is a web application that provides real-time feedback on users' speaking abilities. By leveraging Azure Cognitive Services, including Speech-to-Text and Text Analytics, the app evaluates pronunciation, grammar, fluency, and vocabulary usage. Users can select topics, record their speech, and immediately receive feedback on areas for improvement, along with tips and suggestions for refining their speaking skills. Performance tracking features allow users to see their progress over time, fostering a rewarding, goal-oriented learning experience.

How we built it

The Language Learner app combines several powerful technologies: Frontend: Built using Streamlit, which made it quick and straightforward to create an interactive, visually appealing user interface. Backend: Implemented with Flask, handling API requests and connecting to Azure Cognitive Services for speech processing and analysis. Database: MongoDB stores user data, including progress tracking and feedback history, allowing users to monitor improvements over time. Authentication: Auth0 for secure user authentication, providing a seamless login experience. Speech Processing and Analysis: The core of Language Learner uses Azure Cognitive Services, particularly the Speech-to-Text API to transcribe spoken words into text, and Text Analytics for sentiment and grammar analysis. The Azure APIs also help evaluate pronunciation and suggest improvements based on language models.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating Azure Cognitive Services presented a few challenges, particularly in ensuring consistent accuracy in speech recognition across accents and dialects. Additionally, balancing real-time feedback with response speed was critical; we optimized the app to deliver immediate, reliable feedback without latency. Another challenge was managing the complex data flows between Flask, MongoDB, and the Azure APIs, which required thoughtful structuring and testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're especially proud of successfully integrating Azure’s advanced speech and language tools, enabling the app to deliver highly accurate feedback. The Azure Cognitive Services APIs allowed us to provide users with insightful, personalized feedback on their speaking performance, creating a meaningful learning experience. We’re also proud of the app’s simple and intuitive interface, which makes it easy for users to practice regularly and track their progress.

What we learned

Working with Azure Cognitive Services deepened our understanding of cloud-based AI tools and how they can be applied to real-time language learning. We also improved our skills in managing data flows across a distributed architecture and creating a seamless user experience. Integrating third-party authentication with Auth0 added to our knowledge of best practices in app security and user management.

What's next for Language Learner

In the future, we aim to incorporate a conversational AI model within Language Learner to simulate natural dialogue practice. Additionally, we plan to expand support for multiple languages, providing feedback and analysis for learners across different languages. Further development will focus on enhancing the app’s customization features, enabling users to set specific learning goals and receive targeted feedback based on their personal objectives.
