Inspiration
About five years ago, I discovered the association technique for learning languages, and it proved incredibly effective—some words remain vivid in my memory even years later. Initially, I relied solely on mental imagery, but I thought it would be fantastic to have an app that could visualize these associations. With the advent of powerful AI image generation, I realized I could build such an app myself.
What it does
Language Lantern helps you create personalized flashcards by leveraging AI-generated images tailored specifically to your associations. Unlike other apps where images are generic and often irrelevant, Language Lantern ensures each image resonates personally, significantly enhancing memory retention.
How I built it
The app is built with Flutter for cross-platform functionality. I primarily used Cursor as my IDE, supplemented by Android Studio for additional support and optimization.
Challenges I ran into
As my first app ever, virtually everything was a challenge. The two most significant hurdles were conceptualizing an intuitive and engaging first screen and successfully integrating my first API.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm extremely proud of turning my initial concept into a fully functional app, and equally honored to have been accepted into the Microsoft for Startups program with Language Lantern.
What I learned
- Basic coding skills and app development principles
- The process of publishing an app on Google Play (which required considerable effort and patience)
- Transforming an idea into a tangible, usable product
What's next for Language Lantern
- Enhanced user engagement through interactive features
- More diverse and effective knowledge-testing methods
- Curated word packs (e.g., 1000 most frequently used words, specialized topic vocabularies)
- Incorporating scientifically validated learning frameworks
- Continual refinement of user experience for smoother interactions
