International Cooking Hunt is an immersive Meta Horizon world that brings people together through the joy of food. Inspired by the idea that cooking is something everyone connects with—whether at family dinners, cultural celebrations, or just experimenting in the kitchen—I wanted to create an experience that combines fun, challenge, and learning.

Inspiration

Food is a universal language. Every dish has a story, and every ingredient holds tradition, science, or surprise. I was inspired by the way people bond over meals and how much hidden history exists in everyday ingredients like soy sauce, ginger, or cheese. I wanted to turn cooking into an exciting, interactive adventure where users can travel the world without leaving their virtual table.

What it does

Using Meta Horizon World Builder and basic scripting, I created interactive quests where players must:

  • Each quest presents a cooking challenge from a different country.
  • Users are given clues and facts about ingredients (e.g., “This green herb is a symbol of luck in Italy and adds freshness to tomato-based dishes.” (Answer: Basil)).
  • They must find and bring the correct ingredient to a central table.
  • When all ingredients are collected, a final dish is revealed with a quick cultural story. I designed recipe quests from countries like USA, Italy, Canada and India. Each one includes 3–6 core ingredients and a short cultural story or trivia that teaches something new.

How we built it

  • Designing for clear readability and interaction on mobile.
  • Balancing educational content with gameplay so users learn without feeling like they’re in a classroom.
  • Creating a sense of reward and surprise when the final dish is revealed.

Challenges we ran into

  • Making the interface and gameplay clear and readable for mobile and VR users
  • Keeping the experience educational without becoming overwhelming
  • Designing smooth interactions so players feel rewarded when finishing each dish

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Created a unique blend of learning, play, and storytelling
  • Designed quests that are both engaging and culturally informative
  • Made cooking feel like a shared, joyful experience—even in virtual space

What we learned

  • How to balance gameplay with learning to keep players engaged
  • Simplified scripting logic for object detection and conditional progression
  • UI/UX design for VR platforms and mobile-friendly environments

What's next for International Cooking Hunt

  • Add more countries and regional recipes with new clues and ingredients
  • Include multiplayer collaboration, so users can cook as a team
  • Add mini-games like “spice sorting” or “ingredient timeline trivia” (fun mini-game concept where players guess the origin or historical timeline of different ingredients)
  • Enable voice narration for clues to enhance accessibility and immersion
