Inspiration

Indonesia is not just a collection of islands; it's an archipelago of stories, a tapestry woven with thousands of vibrant cultural threads. From the intricate philosophies etched into a piece of batik to the powerful grace of a Saman dance, our heritage is a living, breathing entity. Yet, we saw a gap. For all its richness, much of this culture remains hidden in plain sight.

Our inspiration came from a simple, shared belief: the most profound way to understand a culture is to experience it firsthand. We envisioned a bridge—a digital bridge—connecting people to the authentic, beating heart of Indonesian culture. We didn't want to just map landmarks; we wanted to map experiences, memories, and connections, for both tourists looking for more than a photo-op and for locals seeking to reconnect with their roots.

What it does

LangkahLokal connects users to the soul of Indonesian culture. At its core, it's a platform featuring a dynamic map pinpointing cultural "landmarks" and "experiences." Users can explore a full-blown catalog of these cultural hotspots—from batik workshops and traditional dance classes to art exhibitions and historical sites. Each point on the map is accompanied by detailed explanations, legends, and history. The app also showcases local folklores corresponding to specific regions, allowing for a deeper understanding of the area's heritage. In essence, it's a tool for discovery, learning, and authentic cultural immersion.

How we built it

Our journey began in the intense, focused environment of the 30-hour Garuda Hacks competition. The initial hours were dedicated to intensive brainstorming, centering on our core goal of connecting cultures. We then conducted a quick analysis of how people currently engage with their heritage, which revealed a significant gap between communities and the authentic, hands-on cultural experiences available to them. This finding became the cornerstone of our strategy. To manage the tight deadline, we defined a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) that concentrated on the most essential features: a dynamic map, the ability to view cultural hotspots, and a system for presenting the stories behind each location. Our approach was to build a functional proof-of-concept that clearly demonstrated the core value of our idea.

Challenges we ran into

Our most formidable challenge was the extreme time constraint. Building a functional prototype from scratch in under 30 hours forced us to distill our grand vision into its most essential components. We couldn't afford to chase perfection; every minute had to be dedicated to building a core loop that worked. This pressure meant making tough decisions on what features to include and what to leave for a future build, all while ensuring the final product was stable and compelling.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of creating a working, tangible prototype in such a short amount of time. Our initial build, while far from perfect, successfully demonstrated the core user journey: discover, learn, and experience. Building a powerful proof-of-concept under immense pressure is a testament to our team's passion and focus. We created not just an app idea, but a functional foundation for a community-driven ecosystem designed to celebrate, preserve, and sustain our heritage.

What we learned

The biggest lesson was the power of an MVP that truly captures the project's essence. The intense time limit taught us that clarity is the most valuable asset under pressure. We also learned that the "how" of our project—building a platform powered by on-the-ground "local ambassadors" who provide authentic, curated data—was just as important as the "what." This community-driven approach is key to the authenticity and richness of the platform.

What's next for LangkahLokal

This is just the first step. Our journey with LangkahLokal has just begun. We are now ready to move beyond the prototype and begin the next chapter. Our future plans involve a staged rollout across Indonesia, continuously enriching our database with the help of local ambassadors. We plan to introduce new features like an itinerary builder and route-finding services to boost cultural tourism. Ultimately, we aim to support local cultural businesses—handicraft artisans, class instructors, and gallery owners—by integrating them into our platform, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that benefits both users and the culture keepers themselves.
