Inspiration
Growing up bilingual and moving frequently, I learned new languages often. That's how Langhub started. I saw that immersion is key, but switching tabs to look up words breaks flow and slows learning. Langhub solves this by making immersion seamless using Chrome's built-in AI and Webfuse Proxy (I work here :)).
What it does
Langhub is a web app that transforms any webpage into an interactive language-learning playground. It allows users to get instant translations, grammar explanations, and answer questions about text and images on a webpage without leaving the page. It features an interactive word selection mode, on-device translation, multimodal Q&A (text, image, and voice), a grammar explainer, and a sleek sidebar UI. All of this is done with a privacy-first approach, as the AI models run directly on the device.
How we built it
Langhub is built using Chrome's built-in AI APIs, specifically the Translator API, Language Detection API, and the Prompt API. These on-device models allow for blazing-fast translations, enhanced privacy, zero server costs, and offline access. The project leverages the power of client-side AI to create a responsive, private, and accessible web experience.
To embed the content I used Webfuse Proxy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am extremely proud of this app not only because I use it almost every day while learning a new language (Dutch currently), but also because it enabled my 60+ y.o. parents to interact with content in different languages more easily. I also received very positive feedback from my dutch teacher and my close friends - people who had a chance to try the app.
What we learned
I learned a lot about new Chrome APIs - and honestly I am so surprised how powerful it is. I've been a power user and software engineer for many years, but all these new capabilities honestly feel like the whole new world.
What's next for Langhub: Your AI-Powered Language Learning Classroom
I built this project specifically for this hackaton, so it is definitely rough around the edges. However, I am looking forward to working on it afterwards as well. I feel very excited and motivated to help others learn foreign languages, now using Chrome's built-in AI capabilities and Langhub.
