Inspiration

I was inspired to build this application by the desire to create a more intuitive and conversational way to access flight information. Existing flight tracking apps often require users to navigate through complex menus or input specific codes. I envisioned an application where users could simply ask a question in natural language, like "What's the status of flight UA234?" and receive an immediate, accurate response. The potential of LLMs like Gemini to understand and process natural language queries, combined with the flexibility and power of the LangChain framework, and use Tools like Tavily API made this vision achievable. I was excited by the opportunity to explore these technologies and create a truly user-friendly flight tracking experience. Also, the challenge of integrating different components, optimizing performance, and designing a seamless user experience motivated me to bring this project to life.

What it does

The application provides insights of flight status information using the Gemini Large Language Model (LLM) within a LangChain React agent framework. Users can input details about a flight (e.g., flight number, route, date) using natural language, and the application leverages the Gemini LLM and Tavily API to understand the request and retrieve the relevant flight status information. This information, such as departure and arrival times, delays, and gate information, is then presented to the user in a clear and concise format.

How I built it:

I built it using the LangChain React agent framework, leveraging its powerful tools for creating an Agentic AI applications. This allowed me to seamlessly integrate the Gemini LLM to handle natural language queries related to flight information.

Challenges I ran into:

One of the main challenges was optimizing the prompts for the Gemini LLM to ensure accurate and relevant flight status information. Fine-tuning the prompts to handle various user queries (e.g., flight numbers, routes, dates) required careful considerations Additionally, managing Tavily API calls to efficiently handle the web search for a user query was a key hurdle. Integrating the LangChain agent within the React framework also presented some initial integration complexities.

Accomplishments that I am proud of:

I'm particularly proud of the intuitive and user-friendly experience of getting flight status I developed. Users can easily input their flight details and receive clear, concise flight status updates. I also successfully implemented error handling and fallback mechanisms to ensure a robust and reliable user experience, even when dealing with unexpected inputs or API issues. The agent's ability to understand and respond to a wide range of flight-related queries is a testament to the effective integration of the Gemini LLM.

What I learned:

Through this project, I gained valuable experience in working with the LangChain framework, particularly in building and deploying React-based agents. I deepened my understanding of prompt engineering and its importance in optimizing LLM performance. I also honed my skills in integrating external APIs and managing data flow within a complex application.

What's next for Gemini flight status agents

The next steps involve expanding the agent's capabilities to include features like real-time flight tracking on a map, proactive notifications for flight delays or gate changes, and integration with other travel-related services (e.g., booking platforms, airport information). Exploring more advanced prompt engineering techniques to improve the agent's understanding of complex user requests is also a priority. Furthermore, I plan to investigate personalization features, such as allowing users to save their frequent flights and receive customized updates.
