Inspiration
Slack is all about consolidating all communication. While it's great for text and video based content, phones and voicemail are a really important part of work life too. We wanted to see if we could bridge the gap between voicemail and Slack, making it available in one place.
What it does
Landline.Online connects your voicemail to your Slack account. Simply log in through LandlineBot and you'll receive your voicemails directly inside of slack! No need to click any links. Listen to them without leaving the Slack experience.
How we built it
Anytime a voicemail comes in to an authenticated user, we download the .wav audio and convert it into a video. That video gets uploaded to Youtube and our LandlineBot pings the user with the Youtube link which displays right in Slack! No need to leave the app!
Challenges we ran into
So many. There are a lot of moving parts in this project. With two of us to integrate with Google Cloud, RingCentral, Slack, Youtube API, and audio -> video conversions, it was really difficult!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Just getting the whole thing done! Super cool to make a phone call and hear the audio in Slack.
What we learned
Most of the APIs! We'd never used them before.
