Inspiration

The application is inspired by the World Health Organisation SDG tagline, ensuring health lives and promote well being for all at all ages. There is still a lot of dumping of papers in Universities especially taking the Uganda scope which do not only create a shabby environment but also less green environment. In most Universities, most of the activities have been automated including academics, transactions and some few other administrative activities. But activities such as leaves and appraisals have been ignored and left paper based. However, these, have continuously been dumped everywhere.

What it does

The application is coming in as a handy tool to foster smooth and automated way of applying, trucking and managing leaves and appraisals(to be added in the future). It also enables ease of communication among the University staff through both the feeds and announcements. This component has been added so that even the individuals on a leave can continuously miss less about what is happening in the University.

How we built it

The system is in a full stack architecture and followed the iterative waterfall methodology of software development. We first gathered our requirements both system and user requirements and used these to design a requirements document. We then set out to the development phase, with first some few mock-ups that we built using Figma. We used Django Restframework to design RESTFUL APIS, tested and hosted them on heroku which can be found on link. We then developed the admin dashboard which can also be found on link. We configured and hosted our static and media files on Amazon s3 and used Amazon CloudFront to smoothly serve them. We then started on the front-end using Vuejs, which can also be found on link.

We used git version control to keep the apps upto date via the CLI. This process became handy for us to cover all, development, testing and deployment and maintenance phases at the same time.

Challenges we ran into

Lack of resources inform of funds to purchase updated software development tools like Amazon premium hosting, domain names. Negative respondants during requirements gathering phases.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have managed to set out the first fully working prototype which is undergoing code reviews by officials from Mbarara University of Science and Technology

What we learned

Following software development methodologies to produce a real world project. Deployment of software on sophisticated but efficient platforms such as Heroku and Amazon. We also learnt how to use git version control How to guild restful apis and test them using postman

What's next for LAMS

We have not currently implemented appraisals so after receiving all system reviews and a green light from our system reviewers, we shall immediately start on performance appraisals too. Expanding to all Universities in Uganda and most probably to the whole of East Africa. Looking at other institutions such as Banks, Parliament, and come up with their suitable versions that may assist them too to automate the two processes.
