Inspiration Lainey was inspired by a simple but frustrating experience shared by many early-career professionals: missing out on promotions—not because they didn’t deserve them, but because they couldn’t articulate their impact. Through interviews, forum research, and our own professional journeys, we realized how few people have a system for tracking their growth at work, especially when things get busy.
What we learned We learned that early-career professionals often deprioritize documenting their achievements. Over 80% of people we surveyed had no consistent system for tracking their work, even though delayed promotions significantly affect lifetime earnings. We also discovered that manual tracking methods (Google Docs, sticky notes, etc.) were inconsistent and unsustainable, and that generic AI tools weren’t specialized enough to help.
How we built it Lainey is an AI-powered tool that integrates directly with your calendar to passively prompt, track, and store your achievements. From Day 1, users complete an Archetype Assessment to better understand their current professional identity. Then, Lainey uses smart prompts and event detection to reduce cognitive load and help users record impactful work as it happens. Eventually, Lainey synthesizes those entries into a compelling, personalized narrative for promotions, reviews, or career transitions.
Challenges Our biggest challenges were in balancing automation with user trust—ensuring Lainey felt like a private coach rather than a surveillance tool—and in designing a product that works seamlessly in the background without adding friction to already busy schedules. We also iterated heavily on the pricing model and go-to-market strategy to serve both university students and knowledge workers post-graduation.
