Inspiration

Most of us use social media every day, but haven't you ever felt exhausted by it? We often feel pressured by time—feeling like we must react to someone's post immediately or reply to messages right away. Furthermore, it is heartbreaking to see social media platforms sometimes becoming tools for cyberbullying or negative pressures among young people.

However, meaningful communication is essential to our lives as human beings. We created Lag Lagoon to solve these issues. By eliminating real-time immediacy, users are freed from social media fatigue. Furthermore, by restricting responses strictly to positive preset choices, we created a safe platform that naturally prevents cyberbullying and toxic behavior.

What it does

Lag Lagoon is a minimalist, calm social web application inspired by bottle messages drifting in a peaceful lagoon.

  • Asynchronous Delayed Feed: Posts do not reach the public feed instantly. They drift in a queue for 2–5 minutes before becoming visible to others.
  • Positive-Only Preset Reactions: Receivers can only respond using warm, predefined reaction choices (e.g., "Like", "I feel you", "Same here", "Great job"). Free-form text replies are completely excluded to prevent harassment.
  • 1-Reaction Limit: Each user can leave only one reaction per post to eliminate numerical inflation and social competition.
  • Bilingual Support: Features a 1-click language switcher (EN / JP) in the header for global accessibility.

How we built it

  • Frontend: Vue 3 (Composition API), Vite
  • Styling: Tailwind CSS with a custom calm ocean palette
  • Backend & Auth: Firebase Firestore for database persistence and Firebase Anonymous Auth for silent, friction-free user identity
  • Development Process: Developed using an AI-assisted, plan-first workflow with clear technical specifications and checklist validation.

Challenges we ran into

Implementing the asynchronous delay without adding heavy server-side background tasks (like Cloud Functions) was a challenge. We solved this by designing a smart client-side timestamp comparison logic (createdAt + delayMinutes), which kept the architecture lightweight while delivering a seamless user experience.

What we learned

We learned that slowing down the pace of interaction completely changes how a social app feels. Removing instant gratification reduces user anxiety and creates a surprisingly peaceful digital space.

What's next for Lag Lagoon

We hope to explore custom delay settings (e.g., hours or days), soft ambient wave audio effects, and expanded emotional reaction choices to make the experience even more soothing.
