Laced Land

Inspiration

We wanted to tell the story of the Małopolska region in a way that felt delicate, poetic, and unlike anything seen before. We chose Bobowa lace, one of the most beautiful craft traditions of Małopolska, as a metaphor for the region’s heritage, landscapes, lightness, and openness.

What it does

The project presents Małopolska as a structure woven from lace mountains, valleys, castles, trams, people all created with AI, where the lace itself becomes the landscape. It offers viewers a new, surreal experience: discovering the region from an entirely different perspective, merging tradition with modernity, and materiality with metaphor.

How we built it

We used generative AI to create visual transformations in which Bobowa lace patterns morph into elements of the landscape: mountain peaks, valleys, castles, tram lines, human figures. The entire composition was built around contrast, the dark background highlights both the delicacy of the lace and the monumental nature of the landscapes.

Challenges we ran into

• Transforming thin, delicate lace into a readable and aesthetically coherent landscape.
• Balancing surrealism with clarity ensuring the viewer sees both the material (“lace”) and the region (“Małopolska”) without one overpowering the other.
• Maintaining visual coherence across a wide range of transformations (craft → mountains, castles, trams, people) while using AI. ## Accomplishments that we're proud of
• Creating a unique artistic vision of the region, blending craftsmanship, nature, and technology.
• Developing visuals where lace truly functions as a landscape, a distinctive and impactful effect.
• Expressing both the cultural depth of Małopolska and a modern, innovative approach, rare in regional visual storytelling. ## What we learned
• That combining traditional craft with AI can produce new, powerful visual and narrative effects.
• Subtlety and sensitivity are crucial: a material can be a metaphor, but it cannot dissolve into visual noise.
• Working with contrast (light vs. shadow, delicacy vs. monumentality) dramatically shapes how the images are perceived, background, color, and composition matter immensely. ## What's next for Laced Land We plan to expand this concept to other regions and cultural motifs, using AI to reinterpret local heritage through new visual styles. Each region will be transformed into its own unique “woven landscape,” shaped by its traditions, patterns, and symbolic materials. Our goal is to build a series of artistic portraits that celebrate regional identity in unexpected, poetic, and technologically innovative ways.
