Inspiration

When a dentist sends a lab a 3D scan with missing data, the lab can reject it. The patient gets called back, and their aligner or night guard is delayed. ClearCorrect lists holes, missing gingiva, and excess material among the most common intraoral scanning issues. We wanted a tool that catches those defects before the patient leaves the chair, on any scanner.

What it does

LabReady checks exported scans (STL or PLY) in seconds. It finds holes, loose debris, mesh defects, split scans, and closed exports, measures each one, and highlights it in a 3D viewer with a pass / warn / fail checklist. A live "Damage the scan" tool lets anyone cut a hole in a tooth and watch LabReady detect and measure it, proving the analysis is real. Everything runs in the browser, so patient data never leaves the office.

How we built it

  • TypeScript + Three.js + Vite, all client-side
  • Mesh topology written from scratch: edge matching, boundary-loop tracing, pinch-point splitting, and debris separation
  • 186 unit tests and 20 Playwright browser tests on synthetic shapes with known answers, including tests proven able to fail
  • Built with Claude Code using a plan → review → test loop, with multi-agent reviews that caught real bugs before any code existed

Challenges we ran into

  • Telling a scan's natural outer border apart from real holes
  • Holes that touch at a single corner getting merged into one outline
  • Keeping thresholds honest: ours are provisional placeholders until a clinician signs off
  • Making a live demo that proves real computation, not a recording

What we learned

How to verify AI-written code instead of trusting it: known-answer tests, skeptic reviews, and recording every design decision. We also learned how mesh geometry (watertight surfaces, non-manifold edges, undercuts) connects mechanical engineering and digital dentistry.

What's next

  • Validate on real intraoral scans
  • Fix area overestimation for thin, curved holes between teeth
  • Add gum-coverage and bite checks with clinician input
  • Talk to dental labs about intake screening

LabReady checks scan integrity only and does not make clinical judgments.
