In recent years, flexible working has gained popularity across a broad cross-section of the economy. An increasing number of people now work part-time or on a freelance basis, outside of conventional business norms and office hours, from home or remotely. The term ‘digital nomad’ reflects the trend for combining flexible online work with travel. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend due to the number of people now out of work and forced to seek employment from home. However, once restrictions are lifted, it seems likely that a proportion of the workforce will continue to seek remote opportunities on a permanent basis.

The blockchain revolution is the perfect complement to this trend. Cryptocurrencies enable fast, efficient cross-border payments, allowing contractors to work and get paid anywhere in the world. At the same time, distrust with the mainstream financial system has led to significant interest in bitcoin and crypto as a wise hedge against inflation, insurance against interference in the payments system, and an investment where few other asset classes offer returns. For these reasons, more and more people are seeking to take part or all of their earnings in crypto.
