Inspiration
La Frecuencia de Luna / Luna's Frequency is rooted in years of collecting field recordings and sound notes across different places. I've long been fascinated by audio as a form of memory, signal, and communication across distance. How sound carries what we cannot see or touch.
The film emerged from:
- My research on memory, migration, and how people carry trauma and lineage across generations
- The way glitch, distortion, and imperfect signals often reveal more truth than clean narratives
- Pedro Costa's approach to sound in portraiture, which treats audio as emotional architecture
- The idea that sound can connect timelines, allowing a character to hear and feel what is no longer present
I wanted to create a story where sound isn't just atmosphere, but a portal, a language, and a way of understanding the past.
What It Does
La Frecuencia de Luna / Luna's Frequency tells the story of a young woman who can travel through time using sound frequencies. Luna moves through abandoned cities, ocean crossings, borderlands, and historical moments. Once she gains control of her power, she chooses to travel to the moment her father made an impossible decision that shaped her life: leaving when she was just a baby.
The film uses sound as a narrative force and a character in its own right. It's a surreal reflection on the sacrifices made that we may never be able to fully understand.
How We Built It
I built the film using a hybrid AI workflow that combined multiple tools to achieve both visual coherence and emotional depth:
Visual Generation:
- Adobe Firefly
- Higgsfield
- Luma
- Midjourney
- Runway Gen-4
Audio & Editing:
- Adobe Premiere Pro
- Eleven Labs
- Epidemic Sound
- Stable Audio
Challenges We Ran Into
- Character consistency: Achieving a consistent likeness for Luna across multiple AI tools and scenes was one of the biggest technical challenges
- Balancing tone: Finding the right balance between surreal visuals and emotional clarity without losing narrative focus
- Glitch control: Navigating unpredictable glitch-heavy outputs while using them intentionally for storytelling
- Sound design precision: Managing audio levels across multiple sources and ensuring accurate subtitle timing for accessibility
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- Creating a cohesive narrative using a multi-tool AI production workflow
- Developing a believable emotional arc within a short runtime
- Achieving a visual language that blends magical realism with documentary textures
- Building an atmosphere where sound guides the viewer through timelines and becomes the film's true navigation system
- Maintaining character consistency across AI-generated scenes through careful pipeline design
What We Learned
- Consistent character pipelines are essential for longer AI-driven stories—planning reference images and prompts saves hours of iteration
- Sound is a critical navigation tool for AI-driven narrative structures, not just an afterthought
- Glitch artifacts can strengthen emotional storytelling when used with intention
- Short AI films benefit from strict scene hierarchies and timing rules to maintain emotional depth
- Clear constraints produce better results across tools
What's Next for La Frecuencia de Luna / Luna's Frequency
- Series expansion: Developing a multi-part series that deepens Luna's timeline and explores more moments in her family's history, while also expanding into futuristic timelines
- Interactive components: Building an experience with tools like TouchDesigner that lets viewers explore specific moments through audio visuals
- Field recording integration: Incorporating my personal archive of field recordings to push the emotional depth and sonic authenticity further
- Dynamic NFT layer: Exploring how sound, memory, and evolving visuals can create collectible, generative art pieces
- Festival & installation circuit: Preparing the film for film festivals and immersive installation formats that highlight its sonic architecture
