Inspiration
Utilities today are only able to provide residential customers with energy data in a passive way. While utility websites provide critical information such as bills, electricity usage, and rate plans, these data are aggregated at low granularity levels and lack actionable advice to optimize their energy usage. As a result, very few people develop the habit of checking their energy data more often than once a month or even every few months. The only interaction between energy data and customers ends up being the depressing moment of "Oh wait, how come my energy bill is so high this month?", just like over a decade ago when smart meters never existed.
To give the power of active electricity usage control back to residential customers, we decide to create kWhWatch.
What it does
kWh Watch is the mission control center for staying on top of your home energy. It enables:
- Quick glance at your realtime energy profile, usage, and costs
- Easy comparison with your own past energy use and your neighbors' current usage trends
- Dynamic setting of your customized alerts on anomalies, delivered immediately to you via kWhWatch dashboard, email, and text message for you to take a quick action
- Actionable advice on how to reduce your energy bills, improve your outage resilience, cultivate your sustainable lifestyle and help you take advantage of rebate and incentive programs best available to your profile
How we built it
kWh Watch is built in Go and Javascript using Golang Buffalo. The dashboard templates after SB Admin 2, an open source admin dashboard theme created by Start Bootstrap.
We utilized sample SVCE data from UtilityAPI.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Hacking it all together within a short few hours!
What we learned
There's so much you can do with energy data and improve people's everyday experience and help the planet become greener!
What's next for kWh Watch
Some of the features we hope to develop in the future:
- Energy profile score
- Recommended alerts
- Easy and flexible time frame definition
- Smart device connections
