Inspiration
In Filipino families, the "Kuya" is the older brother you go to when you need help. A lot of Filipinos struggle with writing in English, whether it's a work email, a job application or a message to a client. Most AI tools either cost money, need an account, or ask you to bring your own API key, which scares off non techy users. I wanted a free writing helper that feels like asking your Kuya for help: simple, friendly and always there.
What it does
KuyaBot helps you write. You tell it what you need in plain words, in English or Taglish, and it writes it for you. It's useful for things like:
Work emails and replies
Messages to clients or your boss
Social media posts and captions
Fixing grammar and making your writing sound more natural
You don't need to sign up or bring your own API key. Just open it and start typing.
How we built it
KuyaBot runs on Vercel with a serverless backend. The AI runs on Groq, which makes responses come back almost instantly. To keep it free for everyone, I set it up with three Groq API keys stored safely as Vercel environment variables. If one key hits its limit, KuyaBot automatically switches to the next one, so users don't see errors. The keys never reach the browser, so they stay protected.
Challenges we ran into
Keeping a free AI tool running without paying for it was the biggest challenge. Free tiers have limits, and one popular day can use them up fast. The key rotation setup solved that. Getting the AI to sound natural and friendly, like a real Kuya and not a robot, also took a lot of prompt tuning, especially for Taglish.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It's completely free, needs no account, and works for people who have never used AI before. It feels like help from family, not another complicated app.
What we learned
For everyday users, removing friction matters more than adding features. No login and no API key setup made a big difference. I also learned a lot about keeping AI apps reliable on free tiers.
What's next for KuyaBot
Ready made templates for common situations like job applications and leave requests, a tone switch from casual to formal, and saving your favorite drafts.
