Inspiration
Kuwí started with the collaboration of two teams, computer science and system engineering in one part and biotechnology engineers in the other. Both groups met during the first day at the Hackaton and decided to work together since they were lacking in each others fields and they had similar ideas towards the focus of the protect they wanted to develop. The big problems of the agro field: Monopolistic practices, low product yields, soil exhaustion, the problems where many, but we were convinced that there is no problem in the world that can not be solved with the cooperation of a large enough group of humans. So that´s the focus of our project, bring the tools to the producers to create a community that is supportive and can work together with mutual interest, so everyone, from the big exporter to the low yield producer gets the benefits.
What it does
Kuwí its intended as a very complete platform that provides useful information to anyone that´s registered that can help him or her take executive action in regard to a variety of problems: Real time information about meteorological phenomena, plagues, geographical and geological information without forgetting helping members create discussion topics or events like conferences, conventions, meetings and supplying useful information about their crops and common problems and solutions, and even if the problematic is not to be found within our database the user can create a discussion topic with other users or contact an expert in the field that can guide him and provide him with immediate support. Also the platform intends to generate statistic information about the frequent crops, yields, plagues, etc. So eventually and with some luck in a very short time we can create a database of the problematics of the field that can be accessed anytime, anywhere with the latest data and with a low error margin. Lastly we hope to help the producers to contact markets directly so they can buy their supplies and sell their crops from a gamma of options so they can select the best prices and providers and as they will all be connected any scam or abuse will be reported and sanctioned, the idea is to create a free, competitive and fair market increasing the overall production and the lives of people at the same time.
How we built it
We used HTML5, JS, CSS, we also use the framework of w3.CSS and Cordova. The planing was desingen taking into consideration bistatistical models with variables such as soil acidity, harvesting planing, pathogen impact, metheorological predictions, fertilizers and technological variables such as the type of irrigation system. The design was created using keynote.
Challenges we ran into
The very first problem we all faced was that we as biotechnologists we were lacking proficiency in the field of informatics and programing and our colleges lacked knowledge about the biological realities behind the problems of agriculture and the multitude of variables the take into consideration. But luckily we found each others and we made a great team.
We also found a great deal of challenges in the process of creating Kuwí; Gathering information about the problems faced by the producers was at best overwhelming, they face unfair prices of supplies, unfair markets, soil exhaustion, governmental indifference and corruption and a long line among many other issues. The bibliographical documentation was a hard and arduous task.
Our colleagues in the informatics department faced serious issues as well, during the first night they got no sleep because of technical issues with the programs they used, pages where crashed and everything was a cybernetic nightmare.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to create (in just two days.) the basics of a platform that in our humble opinion can better the lives of a great deal of hardworking people that don´t really deserve the adversities they face because in practice, all food we as a species consume each day is produced by these people.
We are also proud of the efforts we made as individuals and as a team and we are proud of being a part of this group of young entrepreneurs that are creating the future technologies with the utmost intention of making a better future for all.
What we learned
We learned a lot, about the problems of the agro but also abut its great potential, and the incredible people, hardworking, kind and supportive that inhabit and work in the field to feed us. Even thou it was a Saturday and many of them had work to do, families to see or other compromises they all took a chance to take a few moment of their time to help complete strangers gather information. With this information we saw the realities they all face and that was a dose of realism because the were outrageous sometimes as we have mentioned before.
What's next for Kuwí
We hope that Kuwí manages to keep in development because we are convinced of its potential. The next step will be the presentation and we hope to receive useful advice of the experts in regards of what else we can do to better our idea. After this only time will say but we indeed hope we will have the opportunity of create a positive impact on the lives of our fellow human beings
