Inspiration

KUCHIKAME (口噛甕) was born from a fascination with the fragile link between food, memory, and identity. The idea came from the Japanese belief that every object, even a bowl or a cup, carries the spirit of those who used it, a Shintō-inspired notion of tsukumogami. What happens when memory itself becomes edible, when each bite awakens a past that might not even be yours? The film explores that blurred frontier between consumption and remembrance, between human and spirit, between technology and ghost.

What it does

The film is a poetic, AI-driven short story set in a parallel world where lost souls consume memories to stay alive or rebirth. It blends cinematic realism and surreal folklore, creating an experience that feels both intimate and otherworldly. The narrative unfolds through subtle symbolism, guiding the viewer through an emotional and visual dreamscape.

How we built it

The entire film was generated and composited using AI tools. All imagery was produced with custom workflows in ComfyUI, combining diffusion models, 3D depth maps, and LoRA-trained styles for degrading the "plastic ai look" and world design. Animation was done with AI video models such as Kling, luma dream machine gen2, color grading and editing in After Effects, and sound design created with Udio and ElevenLabs and mmaudio. The workflow aimed to merge technical precision with the organic unpredictability of generative art.

Challenges we ran into

One of the greatest challenges was maintaining emotional continuity across AI-generated sequences, ensuring that each frame served the story and not just the tool. Keeping a consistent visual identity while embracing AI’s imperfections became both a constraint and a philosophy. Rendering times, unpredictable model behavior, and aligning sound to generated motion also demanded countless iterations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

KUCHIKAME won the Storytelling category at the Luma AI Storytelling Competition, and has been featured in several international AI film events. More importantly, it demonstrated that AI cinema can move beyond technical curiosity, toward genuine emotional storytelling.

What we learned

AI is not a shortcut but a new language. The process revealed that the role of the filmmaker shifts from directing actors and cameras to directing emergence itself, guiding chaos into meaning. Each tool became an extension of intuition rather than a replacement for craft.

What's next for KUCHIKAME

The project opened the path for a series of experimental films exploring the mythology of digital souls, continuing to merge generative technology with narrative cinema. It’s part of an ongoing exploration of how memory, data, and spirit intertwine in this new creative era.
