Inspiration

We were curious about what happens when AI agents share a world and have to live with the consequences of their decisions. Could they grow a city, support a population, and adapt when things stop going their way? That curiosity became KRONOS.

What it does

KRONOS is a village of AI citizens, each with their own personality, goals and memories. You play god by typing decrees in plain English: a famine, a gift, a price cap. But every decree has a cost: gifts are taxed from the businesses, and feasts eat the bakery's bread.

The citizens decide for themselves how to respond. They buy and sell, take jobs, start businesses, lend each other money, hold grudges and vote on town policies. A World Health score tracks how the town is doing and explains why. Keep it healthy, or watch it collapse.

How we built it

We connected an interactive 3D village to a backend API and a simulation engine. Each citizen observes only its own view of the world and proposes an action using Google Gemini: a fast, low-cost model for the citizens' daily decisions, and a stronger model to turn the player's plain-English commands into tool calls. The engine checks every action against the rules and applies the changes, keeping everyone in the same consistent world. If a model call fails, a built-in fallback decides for that citizen, so the town never stops.

World state and every simulation event are saved in a database, so we can look back at exactly what happened and why. Citizens speak their conversations aloud with ElevenLabs voices.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was keeping the world consistent while many agents made decisions at once. We made the simulation engine the single authority for world changes: AI models only propose actions, and the engine decides whether they happen.

We also had to connect agent decisions to visible activity in the village, and balance god mode so it is a real game: free help had to come from somewhere, or the player could fix everything instantly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a living town where AI citizens buy, sell, take jobs, start businesses and talk to each other with no script, while our engine makes sure every move follows the rules. Every outcome is logged with its cause, so you can trace anything back to the decision that started it, all in a 3D world that grows from a hamlet into a city in just 36 hours.

Citizens talk to each other with their own voices, you can ask any citizen why they did something and they answer from their own memories, and a World Health score with a lose screen turns the sandbox into a game.

What's next for KRONOS

Our engine already forks timelines. Next is a side-by-side view: rewind to any day, change one thing, and compare the two histories. We also want longer-term memory and hundreds of citizens, so KRONOS can test ideas like a minimum wage or a bread price cap at real scale.
