Inspiration Agriculture employs over 60% of Nepal’s population, yet most smallholder farmers still make critical decisions with almost no timely information. They face climate shocks, exploitative middlemen, knowledge gaps, and near-zero access to formal credit. We were inspired by the gap between Nepal’s ambitious Digital Nepal vision and the daily reality of farmers in places like Kavre, Chitwan, and the mid-hills. We asked a simple question: What if every farmer had a single, practical digital tool that actually worked on low-end phones and intermittent connectivity? That question became KrishiSathi. What it does KrishiSathi is a complete digital backbone for Nepal’s farmers. It combines six tightly integrated modules in one Progressive Web App:

AI Crop Advisor – Ask questions in English or Nepali and get location-aware recommendations Live Market Board – Daily wholesale prices from major mandis + demand signals Micro-Finance Engine – Alternative-data credit scoring and loan calculator Climate Sentinel – Hyper-local early warnings with actionable advice Learning Hub – Bite-sized, low-literacy skill modules Digital Identity & Trust – Farm activity history that builds credibility with buyers and lenders

The platform is designed offline-first and works as a high-fidelity interactive prototype that demonstrates the full vision. How we built it We built the entire platform as a single, self-contained HTML file (2,600+ lines) using:

Modern HTML5 + CSS (Custom Properties, Grid, Flexbox, dark mode) Vanilla JavaScript for all interactivity Chart.js for data visualizations LocalStorage for theme and language persistence Careful attention to mobile-first responsive design and low-literacy UX principles

Everything — dashboard tabs, AI chat, market tables, loan calculator, charts, bilingual support, and theme switching — runs entirely in the browser with zero build step. Challenges we faced

Scope vs. time – We wanted a genuinely comprehensive platform, not a thin demo. Balancing depth across six modules while keeping the code maintainable was hard. Making AI feel useful without a real backend – We designed a rule-based advisor with intelligent fallbacks that still feels helpful and context-aware. Designing for real rural users – We constantly asked: “Will this work for someone with a basic smartphone, limited data, and lower literacy?” This shaped every UI decision. Bilingual experience – Supporting both English and Nepali cleanly without breaking the layout required careful planning.

What we learned

Real impact starts with deep problem understanding, not just cool technology. A polished, interactive prototype communicates vision far better than slides alone. Designing for constraints (connectivity, device capability, literacy) forces better product decisions. Single-file architecture can still deliver surprising sophistication when done carefully.

What’s next After the hackathon we plan to:

Connect real weather and market APIs Add SMS/USSD fallback for feature phones Run a small field pilot with farmers Partner with MFIs and local agri organizations

KrishiSathi is more than a hackathon project — it is a concrete step toward making Digital Nepal real for the people who feed the country.
