Inspiration

In local agricultural hubs, small-scale farmers often struggle to get fair prices due to a lack of instant market updates and sudden crop diseases. We wanted to build a simple, unified technical solution to bridge this gap. Krishi Bandhan was created to deliver live mandi prices straight from local markets directly to an automated communication platform, helping farmers eliminate middlemen exploitation.

What it does

  • Live Mandi Tracking: A clean, user-friendly Android interface that displays current market rates for various essential commodities.
  • Instant Automated Alerts: The system automatically pushes real-time price trends or major updates directly into dedicated Slack channels (#all-krishi-bandhan) using a custom Slack Bot agent.
  • Offline-Ready Performance: Optimized network requests ensure it performs efficiently even on budget-friendly Android devices.

How we built it

  • Frontend: Built with Android Studio using Java and XML layouts for an intuitive, accessible UI.
  • Backend Flows: Integrated Java's HttpURLConnection with the Slack API to handle real-time automated data streams.
  • Architecture: Formulated custom parsing modules (MandiModel, MandiResponse) to structured incoming market data clean and error-free.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating third-party automated agents came with unexpected hurdles. We initially faced issues with expiring OAuth authentication tokens and managing bot channel membership permissions. We successfully debugged this by explicitly configuring scope permissions (chat:write), generating refreshed permanent workspace tokens, and correctly inviting the bot to ensure flawless automated messaging (returning successful 200 response codes).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully building a completely functional, end-to-end real-time API messaging framework under the strict time constraints of a hackathon! Seeing the live mobile application instantly trigger a broadcast onto the communication channel was a massive milestone.

What we learned

We learned a tremendous amount about handling REST client architectures in native Android development, managing token lifetimes securely, and orchestrating webhook-like agents to communicate with multi-platform environments seamlessly.

What's next for Krishi Bandhan

  • Incorporating voice-assisted regional language support (Bengali and Hindi) so non-tech-savvy farmers can query prices hands-free.
  • Expanding the alert network from Slack to everyday platforms like WhatsApp and automated SMS notifications.
