Inspiration
The idea for KRENO came from a very real problem. One of our team members, Alex, has parents who are both doctors. They often talk about how frustrating missed appointments can be, not only because of the financial losses they represent, but also because that time could have been used to help another patient. This made us realize something: while some patients miss their appointments, others are waiting days or even weeks to see a doctor. We wanted to find a way to connect the two.
What it does
KRENO is a copilot for medical appointment scheduling. Its goal is to help doctors identify which appointments are at risk of being missed, prioritize patient follow-ups, and offer patients alternatives such as video consultations, rescheduling options, as well as transportation and daycare assistance.
It is designed to be able to connect with practitioners' existing calendar and practice management tools. This allows for adding an intelligent scheduling layer, rather than replacing their current system.
KRENO also allows doctors within the same practice fields to link their waitlists in order to optimize consultation rescheduling. When an appointment becomes available at a practitioner, a shared smart waitlist connects that opening wth a compatible pairing waiting at a nearby linked practice. Each doctor keeps an individual workspace with their own consultations, and associated risk profiles and more, while the waitlist is the only shared tab across collaborating practices.
The prototype we built uses simulated data t simulate this workflow. It includes a dashboard, an adjustable agenda, a call list, scores and risk trends, the alternative available nearby as far as transportation, costs or other inconveniences, the smart waitlist, a savings analysis tab and an activity log history for clarity reasons.
How we built it
To get started, we used AI-assisted development to turn this idea into an interactive demo, using HTML for the structure, CSS for the visual design and JavaScript for the overall interactions and features, such as charts, statuses and more. We organized the website around the doctor and its front desk's daily workflow. Reviewing the dashboard, checking appointments, contacting patients, exploring alternatives and filling available slots has never been made simpler than with KRENO. We came up with mock data to demonstrate the experience without having to handle real patient information or connecting to live medical systems yet.
Challenges we ran into
Translating our business idea into a working prototype was our biggest challenge. With limited programming backgrounds, we had to first think of the many features and parameters we wanted to include in our project and learn how to make them concrete code-wise. Another challenge was deciding how information was traveling between linked practices. We want to make collaboration between medical professionals as smooth as possible, while respecting privacy and medical information sharing regulations. Our project ensure total anonymity for patients in the shared waitlist system, until they agree to their new consultation slot with a new doctor, which will trigger the sharing of the patient's medical file with the latter, using the doctor's protected email systems to avoid data leaks and more.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're especially proud of our website and our demo video. As business school students with limited programming experience, creating a working webiste was something we honestly weren't sure we could accomplish when we started. What might seem like a relatively simple project to an experienced developer represents a huge achievement for us.
What we learned
We discovered how powerful AI-assisted development tools can be, especially for people without a technical background. Most importantly, we learned that not knowing how to code doesn't mean you can't start building something meaningful. It just means you have to be willing to learn, experiment, and sometimes make a lot of mistakes along the way!
What's next for Kreno
First, hopefully winning the hackathon! :) But beyond that, we'd love to see how far KRENO could go. Our next step would be to connect with medical professionals and independent practices to validate our concept, gather feedback, and better understand their scheduling challenges.
