Inspiration

Through the years, the active involvement of citizens in politics while holding their politicians accountable for their actions has been a cornerstone of democracy. In today’s society, with political issues such as anti-transgender legislature, police brutality, and Asian hate crimes on the rise, there is a great need for a tool that amplifies people’s voices to demand change and political accountability from representatives. We want people to feel politically well-informed and empowered, and we think Kratos, which is Greek for “power,” will help them do so. Change.org is limited in its effectiveness because these petitions are not always brought to the attention policymakers who will be voting on certain bills. Kratos takes the next step to give people the opportunity to reclaim their power as citizens and express to representatives their opinions.

What it does

One-click chrome extension to send a public petition on Change.org to the user's local senator/representative's email.

How we built it

Using JavasScript, HTML and CSS

Challenges we ran into

Due to the time constraints, we were unable to implement some of the features that we would have in the final product, such as using the user's current location, selecting which representatives to send the email to, etc. We only implemented the core functionalities of the Chrome extension but look forward to building upon it in the future.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're extremely proud of the way our team collaborated to create this project. Lily took the lead in coding the extension, I led the prototyping of our final product, and Joselyne led research on the users' potential needs and background information necessary for our product.

What we learned

We learned a lot about the process of creating an actual product that people can use since we got involved in every aspect of the development during this hackathon.

What's next for Kratos

We hope to add functionalities such as searching representatives by zip code, using the user's current location, and having it based entirely in the Chrome extension.
