Inspiration
I used to be an in-home behavioral therapist for children with autism and one of the children I worked for loved Kraken's. He was the first person I thought about when I heard the theme "deep sea". It's still a very fond memory of mine thinking about when me and him used to draw Kraken's together and other undersea creatures all the time. So I pitched the idea of making a game including some pictures of Kraken's and deep sea creatures, with some more brainstorming between my teammates and I, we came up with this discord bot.
What it does
Interactive discord bot users can add to their servers to play a fun number guessing game with cute sea creature themed assets.
How we built it
We built the bot using python and VS code.
Challenges we ran into
We are all beginners and did not have very much python experience before starting this project. The biggest hurdle besides navigating the new language was getting the photo to upload properly. With some trial and error and watching lots of tutorials we figured out how to use a URL of the photo to upload it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most proud that we were able to learn so much and have this experience. None of us had participated in a hackathon before, so this was a major first for all of us. At the beginning, we were pretty intimidated and nervous that we wouldn't be able to make anything or have a good time because we don't have very much experience but the moment we started seeing the bots responses in the chat, especially once we were able to get the image to send, was so satisfying and really proved to us that we were learning and our place here as beginners was just as important as any person with a higher skill level.
What we learned
We learned a lot about python and discord bots. How to upload images to python, how to read a users message in discord, which packages to download and import, and how fun making discord bots can be. Most importantly we learned that hackathons are really fun and that we'll definietly be coming back next year!
What's next for KrakenCrack
We would like to implement a pomodoro timer, which was one of our original ideas for the project but we chose to focus on some less ambitious ideas as we were getting used to the language and working with discord. We'd also like to add sound effects for the images in the number guessing game utilizing discord voice channels.
