Inspiration
The digitization of classrooms is a necessary step in times of lock-down and school closures. Learning Management Software (LMS) such as Google Classroom can be helpful in these cases. However, we noticed that such LMS are often limited in functionality and are not geared toward younger learners in terms of usability and UX design.
Our mission
In creating Koyo Learning, we would like to empower especially those younger students to have an engaging digital learning experience. We believe that tailoring the visual design and making use of gamification can help to provide a unique and efficient for those students. Generous customization options would provide classroom teachers with all the tools they need to create their own digital classroom and enable students to build their very own avatar they can be proud of.
The problem our project solves
- Learning from home
- Familiarizing students with technology
- Addressing a lack of social contact / communication
The solution we bring to the table
- Provide a safe, remote learning environment in times of COVID-19
- Provide an easy-to-use, visually appealing platform geared toward young learners (UX design)
- Empower students to learn efficiently by providing motivational “fun” aspects (gamification)
- Provide a safe chat environment to promote peer communication and interaction
- Make the adoption of digital technology easy for students as well as teachers
- Advanced stages: Provide infrastructure for teachers/counselors/mentors to help children
What we did during the extended weekend
- A concept based on observed needs, backed by research on competitors, market, design, gamification, etc.
- A visual prototype (Adobe XD) showing core features (minimalism, gamification, communication, ...)
- A prototype implementation (HTML/CSS/JS) showcasing a quiz
- A pitch deck outlining our product idea, business, and marketing strategy
- A video pitch
- Further activites: Checking back with mentor(s), brain storming, iterative & incremental development
- Futher documents: Business model canvas, ideas, making process
The solution’s impact to the crisis
- Help classrooms make the transition to a fully digital version to keep education going
- Provide learning management software (LMS) as SaaS package accessible remotely via the web
- Empower students to learn on their own in an engaging, efficient, interactive, and innovative way
- Offer channels for communication of messages, news, and events for an immersive classroom experience
- Provide many customization options to meet various classroom needs
- Familiarize students and teachers with the use of (educational) technology in times where social distancing is tantamount
The necessities in order to continue the project
- Professional feedback / mentoring, especially in terms of education, market analysis, feasibility analysis, design, scalability
- Extensive planning: Requirements engineering, UX driven design, implementation, tests
- Definition of MVP
- User studies / evaluation
- Infrastructure: Website / app hosting, resources (server, database, computers)
- Development of professional skills by training, learning by doing, skill transfer
- A team of professionals and motivated people working towards a common goal
The value of your solution(s) after the crisis
- A unique LMS solution extendable to nearly all classroom constellations
- An easy-to-use, engaging, efficient, and innovative learning platform with many possible future avenues
- A safe remote learning environment alternative to fall back to if in-person teaching is hard (unavailability, disasters, etc.)
- A way to ensure education in geographically sparse / remote regions where it is harder for physical classes to assemble
- Research: UX design, gamification, learning theory, machine learning, etc.; e.g. with user feedback evaluation and user data analysis
- Societal values: Help promote innovation, motivate learning, build a learning community, growing together by interacting with the community
- A profitable subscription-based business model with a huge potential target group and high-demand business domain
Our possible next steps
- Build relations
- Elaborate market research and requirements analysis
- Create a business and marketing plan
- Draft, design, and implement new features
- Perform user evaluations of an iterative & incremental prototype
- Finish an MVP based on our value propositions and prototype feedback
- Enter the market for LMS
