Inspiration

Our country is not economically developed neither ready to cope with a pandemic. We are threatened by an unseen enemy who is destabilizing even the richest countries. We believe that this web app will be helpful for local authorities to fight the spread of this virus and to enable people to get informed for the health status in their surroundings.

What it does

First of all, Kosympts does not primarily intend to visualize the spread of the virus across the country, but it focuses on displaying the symptoms of the virus reported by its previously registered users. Users are authenticated via Facebook, after this they are redirected to a map (of Kosovo). In this map are presented (clustered) previously reported symptoms and their possesors, via icons in different colors. In this section, a user is asked to enable his/her precise location in order to provide a more specific information for community. If a user doesn't wants to give a location, then it will not be identified on map. Whenever the symptoms are provided by the user, the color which represents the user on the map will be changed regarding to the symptoms provided. For instance, if someone has two out of five symptoms, then it will be represented in orange or yellow, and if others have all (or serious) virus symptoms they will be shown as a dark red in a map which will indicate a high possibility of a virus case in that location. Additionally the app provides helpful guidance to the users who posses serious symptoms.

Challenges we ran into

We didn't have a front end developer to help us in a 40 hour project, however the good look of app was crucial. This was one important factor that we faced on our way. As soon as we got reported for the first virus case in our country, we put on work and finished this project in only two nights (almost with no sleep). Time was limited! Working remotely is not very common in Kosovo, this was the first experience we had.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Encouraging software industry to build cost-free applications to cope with this problem in order to help the country we live in, and planing and deploying an app in a couple days were two important things I am proud of we accomplished.

What I learned

We force ourselves to use our creativity in crises. Working remotely is possible. We can sleep less, eat less and be more productive.

What's next for Kosympts

Kosympts in next days will allow unauthenticated users to have access on the map, but not to report symptoms. It will also integrate advice from a virus specialist to improve the algorithm which we use to give a result for symptoms entered. When we start to get the symptom patterns we will collaborate with local authorities to the take necessary steps.
