Inspiration

Nepal's agriculture is facing multiple challenges despite remaining the livelihood of millions. Agricultural imports reached NPR 402 billion in FY 2024/25, agriculture's contribution to GDP has steadily declined, and precision agriculture technologies remain inaccessible due to the high cost of commercial drone systems. We wanted to bridge this gap by creating an affordable AI-powered platform that transforms low-cost consumer drones into intelligent crop monitoring tools for smallholder farmers.

What it does

Kosero is an AI-powered precision agriculture platform that converts RGB and thermal drone imagery into actionable crop intelligence. It enables farmers and agricultural organizations to:

  • Assess crop health using the Visible Atmospherically Resistant Index (VARI).
  • Detect plant water stress through the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI).
  • Generate interactive 3D field reconstructions.
  • Identify unhealthy or stressed crop regions.
  • Produce AI-powered reports and recommendations for timely intervention.

The platform helps reduce manual field inspections, improve decision-making, and increase agricultural productivity.

How we built it

We built Kosero as a full-stack AI platform using:

  • Frontend: React.js
  • Backend: Flask
  • Image Processing: OpenCV
  • Computer Vision: Frame extraction, vegetation analysis, thermal analysis, and 3D reconstruction
  • Analytics: VARI for vegetation health assessment and CWSI for crop water stress monitoring

Challenges we ran into

  • Achieving reliable crop health estimation using low-cost RGB cameras instead of expensive multispectral sensors.
  • Integrating thermal imagery with RGB analysis for meaningful field insights.
  • Processing drone videos efficiently while maintaining acceptable performance.
  • Building an affordable solution suitable for Nepal's fragmented farms and limited agricultural budgets.
  • Designing a financial model that balances affordability for farmers with long-term business sustainability. ## Accomplishments that we're proud of
  • Built a complete AI-powered precision agriculture platform from scratch.
  • Successfully integrated VARI and CWSI into a single workflow.
  • Developed an end-to-end pipeline from drone footage to AI-generated reports.
  • Demonstrated that affordable consumer drones can provide valuable crop intelligence without requiring expensive enterprise UAVs.
  • Created a scalable business model capable of serving farmers, cooperatives, agribusinesses, and government agencies.

What we learned

  • Precision agriculture is not just an AI problem—it requires understanding farming practices, crop physiology, and user needs.
  • Affordable hardware combined with intelligent software can significantly reduce barriers to technology adoption.
  • Thermal imaging and RGB analysis complement each other, providing richer insights than either modality alone.
  • Building for Nepal requires designing around fragmented landholdings, cost sensitivity, and limited access to advanced agricultural technologies.

What's next for Kosero

Our vision is to evolve Kosero into a comprehensive agricultural intelligence platform by:

  • Expanding deployment across municipalities, cooperatives, and agribusinesses throughout Nepal.
  • Building one of Nepal's largest agricultural datasets for crop health, disease prediction, and climate intelligence.
  • Introducing AI-powered yield prediction, disease forecasting, and irrigation recommendations.
  • Scaling the platform to other South Asian countries with similar smallholder farming ecosystems.
  • Partnering with governments and development organizations to support nationwide precision agriculture initiatives.
