Inspiration
I've always been a spiritual person—curious about death, the afterlife, and what truly matters in life. Recently, a dear friend of mine passed away suddenly, without any signs of illness. It shook me. It made me reflect deeply on how fragile and uncertain life is. What is the point of it all? What will I carry with me in my final breath?
I don’t want to leave this world holding regret, resentment, or fear. But the truth is, sometimes I still fear death—when I know I shouldn’t. I realized I needed a space to face impermanence gently, to let go, and to live more meaningfully. That’s what gave birth to Koru.
What it does
Koru is a web/mobile app that helps users explore spiritual wisdom about death, impermanence, and inner peace. It offers daily AI-personalized wisdom cards from global traditions, reflective journaling, emotional seed tracking, and spiritual practices like meditation and breathwork. It’s a calm, sacred space to prepare for the end—and live more fully now. Although I seed it with some kind of practices, it surprises me with some new types of practices / wisdom cards that AI generates on the fly. In short, I don't even know what kind of creative practices it may come up with (of course within guidance only).
How we built it
Koru was built using Bolt (no-code), integrated with OpenAI for wisdom generation and seed extraction, and designed for mobile-first use. The app is structured around a 4-part daily journey: draw wisdom, reflect, practice, and grow.
Challenges we ran into
Time was the biggest challenge—I only discovered this hackathon 5 days ago. I was also helping a grieving family prepare a funeral for a close friend, while caring for two children. On the technical side, Bolt occasionally failed to save changes. On the design side, I didn’t have time to develop a polished UI—but focused instead on core experience and function.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was my first time using Bolt, and I was able to prototype a working spiritual wellness app in less than a week. I successfully integrated AI-powered features like wisdom delivery, journaling prompts, emotional seed extraction, and suggested practices—all with a deep sense of purpose and soul.
What we learned
The power of no-code is incredible. I’ll definitely be using it more in future projects to bring soulful ideas to life, fast.
What's next for Koru
There’s so much more ahead:
- Expand the practice library: chanting, affirmations, movement
- Add voice journaling and conversational features
- Build a “moments before death” ritual mode
- Develop legacy tools: last words, will templates, farewell messages
- Complete the Seed Mandala visualization
- Collaborate with death doulas and funeral professionals to bridge spiritual prep with practical support
Koru is just beginning. My vision is to help people meet the end—not with fear, but with truth, clarity, and peace.
