Inspiration

We aim to provide a more sustainable source of cosmetic ingredients, moving away from reliance on animal agriculture, which is environmentally unsustainable.

What it does

Our initial ingredient line is marine collagen peptides sourced from tuna processing by-products. This aims to offer a more sustainable alternative collagen source, shifting from the dependence on bovine agriculture, which is known for its significant greenhouse gas emissions.

How we built it

We will develop a bioprocessing facility to extract collagen from tuna by-products such as heads, skin, and bones. We will purify the collagen peptides to a form that is ideal for use in formulating skincare products.

Challenges we ran into

Our current collagen processing yield is suboptimal, and it's crucial for us to achieve higher collagen yield to offer competitive pricing in comparison to other marine collagen suppliers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have identified the optimization plan for collagen production and outlined key parameters for testing. Now, we're looking to test the plan to further refine and enhance the process.

What we learned

We've learned that cosmetics brands prioritize ingredient efficacy, pricing, and availability/lead time when sourcing raw materials. This understanding guides our development efforts and shapes our marketing content to emphasize these critical factors.

What's next for Koraal

Our primary focus will be on research and development efforts aimed at maximizing collagen yield and optimizing pilot production development, while also starting our marketing efforts. Our goal is to have pilot production ready with optimized processing capacity to begin our sales.
