Inspiration
As two grade 12 students heading to university next year, the issue of budgeting properly for all of our daily tasks became more and more important. In order to reduce the stress, and find a better way to keep track of things, we came up with Koi Cash, which is meant to be our guide to achieving a financially secure future.
What it does
Koi Cash takes in a lot of information about the user and fills in some of the blanks about the user. After this, the program creates a budget and some of the goals that the individual can strive for achieving, as well as tangible, SMART goals to reaching these goals.
How we built it
The database was built using MongoDB and the front end was built using Next JS. For the backend of the program, the code was written in python, using a Flask server to allow for communication between the front and back ends.
Challenges we ran into
We had a lot of difficulty getting everything to work properly with each other, and it was difficult to get all the different pieces of the program to communicate. In addition, the authentication for numerous users was also something we struggled on, but ultimately got it to work in the end. In addition, Next JS was also a challenge to work with, as it was much more difficult to use than React JS.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to learn many new softwares during this hackathon, for example, Flask, MongoDB and Next JS are all tools that we will be using in the future. Furthermore, we are extremely proud of the challenges that we were able to overcome, especially under such sleep deprived conditions.
What we learned
- Flask
- MongoDB
- Postman
- RESTful API
- Next JS
- Computer Vision
What's next for Koi Cash
We hope to continue to develop Koi Cash and make it a better tool with more features. A few things that we were thinking of making stock advisory page as well as a new sentiment analyzer, but we were never able to get it to work under the time constraints. A more gamified experience would also greatly encourage people to save, making the path to financial security more pleasant. We also hope to properly deploy the app.
