Inspiration
Coming from a coffee-producing country, we have witnessed firsthand how major corporations can impact the lives of MSME farmers and exporters. Some coffee farms are located in remote mountainous areas, making it difficult for buyers to even know that high-grade coffee beans exist in those regions. As a result, these grade A coffee beans often end up rotting and going to waste in the fields or storage sheds, waiting for a buyer to come by.
This inspired us to create the Kofi Maketples (Coffee Marketplace) app, a platform that provides coffee farmers and exporters with a place to showcase their coffee products to potential buyers worldwide
What is Kofi Maketples?
Kofi Maketples (Coffee Marketplace) is a platform that connects coffee farmers and exporters with potential buyers worldwide. The web application provides information on available coffee products, including details such as origin, flavour profile, and pricing. Buyers can directly purchase coffee products through the app, while farmers and exporters can track their orders. Our goal is to create a seamless and efficient experience for all parties involved in the coffee trade.
The Problem
Coffee is a major commodity traded worldwide. The issue is that international markets are dominated by major coffee-producing countries and corporations, leaving no space for small-scale farmers and exporters to showcase their products. Therefore, the Kofi Maketples app addresses this problem by providing a platform for MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) farmers and exporters to exhibit their coffee products to potential buyers globally.
How does Kofi Maketples work?
Farmers and exporters will register on the application. On the Kofi Maketples dashboard, they can upload their available coffee products, providing information such as
- Origin
- Flavour profile and
- Pricing. This information will be displayed on the storefront for potential buyers to make direct purchases through the Maketples app.
How We built it?
Kofi Maketples is a web application built using the following technologies:
Client-side:
- ReactJS: A front-end JavaScript library used for building user interfaces.
- Redux: A state management library used for managing application data.
- React Router: A library used for routing and navigation.
- Axios: A library used for making API requests.
Server-side:
- Node.js: A JavaScript runtime used for building server-side applications.
- Express: A web application framework used for building RESTful APIs and web applications.
- MongoDB: A NoSQL database used for storing data.
- Mongoose: A library used for interfacing with MongoDB.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have successfully completed the entire back-end using Node.js and MongoDB. This is our first experience working with a NoSQL database, and we are delighted to have successfully implemented most of the controllers. Coming from a traditional relational database background, we consider this a significant accomplishment in our project.
What we learned
We learned how to work with the following technologies:
- MongoDb
- Mongoose
What's next for kofi Maketples
Once the MVP is launched, we plan to add the following features:
- Advanced order tracking and communication between buyers and sellers.
- Integration with third-party payment processing systems.
- Advanced analytics and reporting for farmers and exporters.
- Customizable product labels and branding options for farmers and exporters.
